Vision:

Prisons are integral part of the Criminal Justice System. Prisons are established for safe custody of convict and undertrial prisoners. The Main objective of imprisonment aims to deter those who would otherwise commit crimes and to make it less likely that those who serve prison sentence will commit crimes after their release. Department is aimed to correct, reform and rehabilitate prisoners to enable them to become good human beings and socially responsible citizens in the society after their release.

Mission:

To provide minimum standard of living / treatment of living / treatment to the prisoners remanded to judicial custody and at the same time to reform / rehabilitate them by involving them in various vocational, spiritual, educational activities so that they become useful citizen of the country after their release.

Basic Duties and Responsibilities:

Basic duties of prison staff are to receive and detain all persons duly committed to his custody by any Court according to the directions contained in any writ, warrant or orders by which such person has been committed. On admission, they are given medical facilities, food, clothing as per prescribed scale and are treated for their crimes, corrected and reformed Prison Department strives hard to reach these goals.

Citizen's Rights

Though the General Public/Citizens rarely come in contact with the prison administration. However duties and responsibilities of prison officers with reference to the following rights of citizen are as follows.

  1. Every person who has reasonable grounds of believe that his kith or kin are in jail can approach the concerned jail Superintendent and get the details of the confinement of the concerned.
  2. A person on admission to a prison is informed of the grounds of his detention by explaining the orders awarded by the concerned hon’ble courts on their warrants.
  3. An un convicted prisoner detained in prison can wear his own cloth and have his own bedding if he can afford to have. Otherwise clothing and bedding will be issued at Government cost.
  4. Under trial / Convict prisoner shall be granted all reasonable facilities at proper time and under proper restrictions for interviewing or otherwise communicating either orally or in writing with their relatives friends or legal advisers. Under the circumstances relatives, friends, or legal advisers as the case may be may approach the Jail Superintendent or a Jail Officer specially posted for the purpose, apply orally or in writing, seeking permission for interview, which will be examined by the jail authority and accord sanction depending on the eligibility of the prisoner for such interview as per rules.
  5. Person, Institutions, NGO’s Industrialists, interested in rehabilitation of prisoners after release can approach Jail Superintendent and under his guidance select needy deserving prisoners facilitate training them in different trades and can provide them job else were after release.
  6. Institutions may come forward to provide education to the children of prisoners and thus can approach Superintendent.
  7. Women organization may come forward to look after the separated children of women prisoner, educate them arrange interview with their mothers.
  8. Religious Ministries with prior permission of the Jail Superintendent can meet the prisoners conduct prayers ,Bhajans etc., as to up lift their moral status.

Grievance Redressal Mechanism:

For any grievances citizens /general public may contact either orally / in writing may lodge the complaint to the concerned prison superintendent.

( Monday to Saturday) (Except Second Saturday)

The details of the concerned grievance redressal officer is be available on the notice board of each and every prison main gate.
